9 Raising Quail meat and eggs
    1.) Brooder
An incubator is nothing more than a heated container for birds live there. The temperature should be kept in the mid-90s until the birds begin to feather
outside. The temperature of the ambient air for your incubator will determine the power of the bulb you need reach this temperature. You can use anything from a flood light 75w to 250w heat lamp. Make sure your outlet and the wire can handle power of the bulb you use! I am using a 75w red flood light most of the time, and add a second in winter. I also have wired the mine to a dimmer switch for more control, but that really was not necessary. As long as the incubator is great enough, birds will selfregulate and move closer or further from the bulb as they see fit. My incubator is 2'x4 '13 "tall made from waste plywood. tanks and fellows also work Rubbermaid well.

      Housing Requirements:
I keep one of these beside the incubator so that I can place the chicks directly in the hot, dry environment. Once a dozen or two are in it, I transfer to more incubator.

In the incubator, chick Any type of charger will work, store-bought or home. I prefer the larger the power capacity that I can adapt to ensure they never short of food. If you use a power supply device that birds need to stick their heads in, it will reduce power wasted as dropped food remains in the charger.

It is recommended that you keep a sort of dry litter for birds to walk on. Pine shavings, shredded paper, perhaps leaves or straw, use what you can get. For the first couple of days lying bottom paper towels. Their legs are very fragile and if they slip, it could end in a damaged leg which is set in this little bird.

          • #20
Once the birds begin to hatch, wait until there is a bunch of them. Remember that you do not want open the incubator for more lockdown than is absolutely necessary. I also found if you enter birds in hours incubator Outside they do best in groups rather than individuals. If you notice all the birds are huddled under the light, the incubator is too cold. If all birds are pressed toward the outer edge of the incubator it is too hot. If birds are evenly spaced the temperature is good enough. After the feather birds on additional heat may be reduced or
eliminated. At this point, you can move them to the grow out container, or just use your incubator as grow out container if you want.

Be nice! These little guys are pretty delicate
            when they are young.

              Additional considerations
Make sure the litter remains dry, either by change or add others. Quail have small feet which can easily obtain damages if kept wet or muddy conditions. Depending on your storage
density you may need to adjust existing often. Birds are the tennis ball golf ball size when in
the incubator. I kept it in storage densities up 12 birds / square feet without problems. These were all birds of the same size and in the same trap. Occasionally, you will check the incubator and find one or two of them mysteriously gave up his spirit. It that is happening. Try looking in perspective you just save a little food on birds which genes you probably did not want anyway. This does not usually happen more after the first week.

              • #22
After the birds have feathers out and do not require more heat you can move them to the grow out pen. The pen grow out can be just container of your choice. This can range from a a battery cage quail tractor, just something to contain where they can eat, drink and grow. A large capacity tray combined with a automated watering system is suggested limit the work, but not necessary. My pens are developing '2'x2 9 "tall, made from ½" x ½ "hardware cloth.
The charger is a "pipe 4 with a slot cut mounted outside the cage. The door is made from 1 "x2" hardware cloth, allowing birds to stick their heads through to get to food. Each cage has its own cup of water connected to the automated system.
at five weeks of the hatch males will start "Bird" at the time I graduate to the slaughter freezer, I let women continue to grow until I have space. I picked the males to 5 weeks because I want to keep it quiet, and they annoys the hell out of me.

Front view of a push box.
The pens are exactly the same as push them out
pens, except that they are on an angle. The rear of the
pen is 2 "greater than the front, or a 1/12 pitch. This
allows the eggs to roll in front of the cage
gathering easy. Not all eggs will roll on
forward with this step, and you might want

                    Housing Requirements: Couches
                    Additional Thoughts
I kept laying hens up to a storage density
34 birds / square feet, these birds were all of the
and even hatch had been kept together since
                    they hatched.
Gather eggs before filling up the charger. If
you do this in reverse all the birds to be
before the cage trying to get food while you are
try to get to get the eggs.
If you get a sudden drop in egg production
check the water supply. If the water line is
trendy malfunction or something and birds
do not get enough water, they stop laying almost
If you get the production of eggs uneven as hazardous or
unless you receive, see the light cycle
make sure they get at least 16 hours of light.

                      Quail Tractor
During the summer of 2013, I used an extra rabbit Quail tractor as tractor. The quail seemed
enjoy the space and be able to dig in and play grass. The bare and broken quail
the area where they were maintained. Like a chicken tractor, I managed to successfully sow pasture mix seeds after each movement of the tractor.
Just like a chicken tractor, how often it needs to move depends on many variables. These variables fluctuate as the seasons change and
birds grow. The observation of experience of how your state rebound pastures will be the best teacher. When designing your tractor, make sure not to have all openings that birds can oust or As. Quail are very small. If you use an open background tractor, make sure you have a good contact with the ground all around. Birds can press on substance rather easily if the grass is rough or uneven. A senior home birds against the elements and is very closely secures important. A major way out of my system birds concerned jump, hit the ceiling of the cover so it swelled, and the aircraft to space created between the sheet and the 2x4. Paddock ShiftI'm interested in trying it for growth on meat the birds. I plan to experiment with a number of game ups and reports of my successes and failures. Quailtopia Build your own system! You are limited only by your imagination and your willingness to spend money these little buggers. Start small, scalable, make sure that your plan will work before start building your own personal Quailtropolis.

Remember to build in height or build small. Quail powerful legs and can jump up to 3 'up. This can lead to neck broken if the accommodation is not
large enough to accommodate or short enough to discourage jumping.
                        Other Housing
~ $ 0.50 / pound. A laying hen will eat ~ £ 1 / months. I am aware that the life of this dry food is 2 months, during a Purina representative. Although I do not doubt that loses some nutritional value over time, I've never known consequences of the use of food "old". I keep a minimum 2 months of supply on hand, knowledge probably an additional 23 months in
time already on it before buying distribution. I have never had a quail turn their nose up at it.
Quail are omnivores and also enjoy a varied diet as they can get. They eat most things a chicken will eat, so it is small enough they get in their beaks. I am currently fed 100% mine groceries with the intention of less that, as far as I can through alternative

                          Purchased grocers
Grocers purchased is available for raising quail. This is
like dry dog food in consistency, not all
beans or vegetarian based. When choosing a food
you need to get protein at least 24% for a good egg
production. They will survive and still throw with
% less protein, but you'll smaller eggs and
less often. The higher the% you can give protein
most eggs and meat birds will.
I Purina game bird starter uses 27% 30% protein
and had no problem with it as a standalone
feed. Grocers purchased is compact, easily
available, stores well and is affordable at
                          2) Alternative feeding / supplementary feeding
                          A) Black Soldier Fly larvae
What appears to be a very promising food. They turn
scratches in the food protein to a very efficient rate.
Good for 7+ area, but I'll try anyway
                          in Zone 6.
                          B) mealworms
This could be my alternative to BSF .. Meals
Worms are somewhere in the range of 40% protein,
and very low inputs. I'll be experimenting with
                          it soon.
                          C) Cabbages
Freshly sprouted grain, 24 days old, before he
really turns in a factory. This is something I
want to try, and will be trying in the early summer.
                          D) Ticks
Apparently quail love to eat ticks. I'm not going to
spread ticks, but if you have a surplus of them
in your yard, tractoring quail could be the solution.
                          E) seeds
Tiny seed could have the chance to become
Food quail. Lambsquarter, millet, lettuce, anything
with a small seed might be worth trying, especially
if it is abundant and can be grown with little or no
                          F) Other insects
Maggots, larvae, beetles, ants and all types of
bugs have the potential of being converted
                          in delicious quail meat.
19 Raising Quail meat and eggs
doohickey to add more water to the cup. Rather
the bird will try to get the last bit of water out of the
cup and accidentally hit the thing, causing
more water to enter the cup. At first I thought the
birds were too stupid to understand it and I have not
think they would work. They work out, just
not in the way I had thought.
There are many different options to provide
your birds with water. Each has its own set of
pros and cons. Bowls and pots
                          automated systems almost any method
you can use for chickens can be adapted for quail.
I personally do not have time to be cleaning and
10+ filling bowls a day, and since I already had a
System watering gravity to my rabbits that he was
really obvious to just type it.
I went with these watering cups. They do a good
work to keep things dry and animals with a
constant supply of fresh water. They can be
removed and the O-rings can be replaced if
necessary. A word of caution if you have a record
Water has a sediment filter in line with your system
                          to prevent clogging cups
                          once happened to me.
Furthermore, these cuts are not expected "fill" and
the birds will never "learn" to hit the yellow
                          20 Entries
                          Doohickey watering. Water
                          is particularly important. If
                          your birds stop asking,
                          make sure that the
                          water system works
                          firstly, as a primary
                          because of lower yields.
Eggs: Many eggs! 250+ per bird per year. Little
in size, ¼ the size of a hen's egg, but packed
with nutrients, see the next section for more.
Meat: Quail meat is delicious and extremely low
fat. It has a natural taste and not really
gamy taste or bland. Cook it similar to venison,
or other foods low in fat content. It dries easily if
overcooked. See the slaughter section (p25) for more details
                          Drees how a bird
Heat: Quail are warm-blooded and release
body heat. If you have enough of them in a
confined space that could be an asset or a
                          problem depending on your situation.
Organs: food or people depending on the dog food
your preferences. My dogs have learned to
recognize when it's time to slaughter, and always
                          gather around the spoils.
Feathers: crafts, fishing flies, high nitrogen content
Skin: Compost can be tanned for dog training /
dog toy or so I read.

Quail eggs make a happy puppy.
differences are that the quail eggs contain more
amounts of iron, vitamin B1 (thiamine), riboflavin,
Niacin, vitamin B12, short chain saturated and
                            monounsaturated fatty acids (14: 0, 16: 1), and
cholesterol. They also have lesser amounts of
carbohydrates (mainly starch), vitamin D, and
polyunsaturated fatty acids compared to chicken
                            the eggs.
These differences are probably due to
differences in the yolk size relative to the
full egg. It is also important to note that in the case
fatty acids, diet can have a significant effect on the
represented relative amount. At least one study
have shown that supplementation with omega-3 fats
amines in the diet of a increased amount of the layer
Omega-3 fatty acids in eggs. In some ways,
